Outlaw biker and novelist Sonny Barger was a founder member of the Oakland, California Hells Angels Motorcycle Club in 1957 when he was just 16 years old.

He was a published novelist with five novels to his credit, as well as a frequent guest star in television and movies. On October 8, 1938, Ralph Hubert Barger was born in Modesto, California.

When Barger was four months old, his mother abandoned the family, leaving him and his elder sister Shirley to be raised by their grandmother and their alcoholic father.



He was suspended from school multiple times as a child in Oakland for attacking instructors and was frequently involved in fights with his peers. He dropped out of school in the tenth grade.

When he was sixteen, Barger enrolled in the U.S. Army and worked at a grocery shop, but he was discharged after fourteen months when it was revealed that he had falsified his birth certificate to enter the military.

Before moving in with his sister and her family, Barger worked in a variety of low-paying jobs and lived with his father in a single hotel room.

Barger had a throat cancer diagnosis in 1983 as a result of years of excessive smoking. At the San Francisco Fort Miley VA Hospital, his diagnosis and care were provided.

Michael Tralla, MD, FACS, conducted a complete laryngectomy with bilateral functional neck dissections on a patient with stage III laryngeal carcinoma.

He thus learnt to vocalize utilizing the muscles of his oesophagus after having his vocal cords amputated. 2012 saw Barger undergo surgery due to prostate cancer. After having his prostate removed, he was determined to be cancer-free.

Cause of Death

Barger, who was 83 years old when he passed away on June 29, 2022, had been battling liver cancer. He passed away quietly in the comfort of his own home.  A message on his Facebook wall broke the news of his passing.
