Ralph Hubert Barger, also known as Sonny Barger, was an American outlaw biker, novelist, and actor who was a founding member of the Oakland, California, chapter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club in 1957.

He passed away on June 29, 2022. He wrote five novels and appeared on television, and in motion pictures.

Elsie Mae (née George), Barger’s first wife, passed away on February 1, 1967, from an embolism in circulation following an unpermitted abortion.



He started dating Livermore native and former beauty queen Sharon Gruhlke in 1969. In 1973, while serving a sentence in Folsom State Prison, Barger wed Gruhlke.

After years of heavy smoking, Barger received a throat cancer diagnosis in 1983. The Fort Miley VA Hospital in San Francisco handled both his diagnosis and care.

Having stage III laryngeal carcinoma, Michael Tralla MD, FACS had a complete laryngectomy with bilateral functional neck dissections.

As a result of having his vocal cords amputated, he developed the ability to vocalize by utilizing the muscles in his esophagus.

In 1998, Barger moved back to Arizona with his third wife Noel and stepdaughter Sarrah after completing his jail term there. He joined the Cave Creek chapter of the Hells Angels and started working as a motorcycle technician.

Following a rumored domestic argument with his wife Noel and stepdaughter Sarrah at their New River, Arizona home on March 7, 2003, Barger was taken into custody by deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

A lacerated spleen, shattered ribs, and back were among Noel’s injuries. For serious violence, Barger was later given an eight-day prison term. On June 25, 2005, he was hitched to his fourth wife, Zorana.

Due to prostate cancer, Barger underwent surgery in 2012. Following the removal of his prostate, he was determined to be cancer-free.
