On June 26, 2016, Kuhl was called up from Indianapolis and made his major league debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers, which the Pirates won 4–3.
During his first appearance, Kuhl allowed three runs on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts. On July 16th, he was sent to Indianapolis and recalled on August 9th.
