Colorado Rockies pitcher German Marquez made his first start after it was rumored that he had signed a five-year, $43 million contract extension.
Marquez threw seven scoreless innings in the Rockies’ 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in the 11th inning, and he was dominant throughout, dazzling at moments and incredibly gritty at others.
As the Rockies have come to expect, he was every bit of what they hope for in the future.
Prior to signing this contract extension, Marquez, who turned 24 on February 22, would have been eligible for arbitration following this season.
Deal with Marquez lasts through 2023. It covers his arbitration eligibility for three years and his first year of free agency.
Marquez, who entered this season with two years and 27 days of major league service time, had signed a $565,000 contract for this season as a pre-arbitration player without any leverage.
As reported by The Athletic, the new contract for Marquez includes an escalator clause if he wins a Cy Young Award that increases his income by $1 million or $500,000 for the fifth and sixth years of the contract, respectively.
In the event that Marquez twice finishes in the top three of the Cy Young voting while his contract is still active, the option can change from being a club option to a mutual option.
When Was German Marquez Drafted?
In July 2011, Márquez signed as an international free agent with the Tampa Bay Rays. After the 2015 season, the Rays added him to their 40-man roster.
