José Iglesias debuted in the major leagues in 2011 with the Boston Red Sox.

Iglesias defected from Cuba during the 2008 World Junior Championships, just one game into the tournament. In 2007-2008, he batted .322/.358/.382 with La Habana and fielded .964 at shortstop.

He went 17 for 85 with 3 doubles and 4 walks as a rookie in 2006-2007. As a backup to Michel Rodriguez at SS, he fielded .939 and also saw action at second base (no errors).

On September 8, 2009, Iglesias debuted with the Red Sox, signing a four-year, $8.25 million contract.

Craig Shipley and Johnny Dipuglia served as scouts for the event. While his defensive performance has been tremendous, his bat still needs development.

In 18 games with the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League, Iglesias batted .275 with 12 RBI.

Early in 2010, he debuted in the minors with the New York-Penn League’s Lowell Spinners, where he hit .350 in 13 games.

He was then promoted to the AA Eastern League’s Portland Sea Dogs, where he hit .285/.315/.357 in 57 games, with 5 steals in 7 tries.

At shortstop, he fielded .966. For the Peoria Javelinas, he batted .269 after that. Baseball America ranked him #52 on its top-100 prospects list after the season, and they had just rated him as the greatest defensive shortstop in AA.

Among BoSox farmhands, only Casey Kelly ranked better. He began 2011 with the Pawtucket Red Sox of the AAA International League, where he batted .253 in his first 24 games with only two walks and no extra-base hits.
