He was assigned to the Class-A Advanced Lake Elsinore Storm in 2013 and was promoted during the season to the Double-A San Antonio Missions. He participated in the 2013 All-Star Futures Game. Austin joined the El Paso Chihuahuas of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League in 2015.

He was promoted to the major leagues in May 2020 and he made his MLB debut on May 4 that year for the Padres. He was traded to the Cleveland Guardians in August 2020.
