Walter Johnson is the pitcher who has the most 20-win seasons. His first season with twenty wins was in 1910 when he was only 22 years old (25-17), and his last season with twenty wins was in 1925 (20-7). (age 37). Johnson set a record by leading his league in strikeouts on 12 separate occasions, including eight straight seasons (1912-19).
From 1907 through 1927, he was a right-handed pitcher with the Washington Senators in Major League Baseball. When he was hired as manager of the Senators in 1929, he also served as the team’s general manager for the following two seasons (1932 and 1933).
Johnson, widely regarded as one of the best pitchers in baseball history, set numerous records during his career, some of which have been unbroken for more than nine decades.
As of this writing, he holds the all-time record for shutouts with 110, second place in wins with 417, and fourth place in complete games with 531.
Since his retirement in 1927, he held the record for most career strikeouts, with 3,508, until three players (Steve Carlton, Nolan Ryan, and Gaylord Perry) ultimately broke it in 1983. Before Bob Gibson’s 3,000th strikeout on July 17, 1974, Johnson was the only player to reach that milestone.
Also, he has a record of the most innings pitched among the 18 members of the 3,000 strikeout club, and the lowest strikeouts per nine innings pitched (5.34 K/9).
