The Houston Astros are an American professional baseball team based in Houston. The Astros compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division, having moved to the division in 2013 after spending their first 51 seasons in the National League (NL).
Many former Houston Buffaloes players and employees went on to play in the major leagues. In charge of Houston until the completion of the 1964 season, Harry Craft had been there since 1961.
Spec Richardson, the Astros’ general manager from 1967 to 1975, also served as the team’s business manager before returning to the helm in 1967.
Players like J.C. Hartman, Pidge Brown, Jim Campbell, Ron Davis, Dave Giusti, and Dave Roberts were selected to remain in the major leagues despite the fact that the majority of the major league team’s players were recruited through the 1961 expansion draft of Major League Baseball.
The radio broadcasting team was also retained by the new Houston Major League Baseball franchise. Gene Elston and Loel Passe worked together as color commentators until Elston’s retirement in 1976. In 1986, Elston remained with the Astros.
Colt Stadium, a temporary arena constructed immediately north of the indoor stadium building site, was the team’s first home.
