The Kansas City Royals are an American professional baseball team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Royals compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) Central division.
This is the team’s first World Series appearance since 1985 when they triumphed over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
There are two historical Negro league baseball teams with the name “Royals” that played in the first half of the twentieth century that inspired the team’s name. The American Royal, a livestock and horse show, rodeo, and championship barbecue competition held annually in Kansas City since 1899, also inspired the team name “Royals.”
As a side note, Satchel Paige and Jackie Robinson both played for teams in the California Winter League, one of which was managed by Chet Brewer and toured the Midwest during its heyday in the 1940s.
The Los Angeles Monarchs had ties to the Monarchs’ organization, but they were unable to use the Monarchs’ moniker.
Other professional sports organizations in Kansas City, such as the NFL Kansas City Chiefs and NBA Kansas City Kings, and the Negro National League Kansas City Monarchs all share a similar name.
