Green Bay, Wisconsin is home to the Green Bay Packers, a professional American football team. The Packers are a team in the National Football League’s National Football Conference North division.
The Packers were founded in 1919 by Earl “Curly” Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun. The franchise’s history dates back to 1896 and earlier semi-pro teams in Green Bay. Before joining the American Professional Football Association (APFA), the forerunner to the modern NFL, in 1921, the Packers played semi-pro football in Wisconsin and the Midwest from 1919 to 1920.
The smallest major league professional sports market in North America is by far the Green Bay area. The Packers have won 13 league championships, the most in NFL history, with nine regular-season NFL crowns and four Super Bowl victories. Before the AFL-NFL merger, the Packers were the first NFL team to defeat the AFL, winning the first two Super Bowls in 1966 and 1967.
Under the direction of Vince Lombardi, who is recognized with the Vince Lombardi Trophy, the Packers made their first two Super Bowl appearances. Following that, they won two more Super Bowls under the leadership of head coaches Mike Holmgren and Mike Mccarthy, in 1996 and 2010, respectively. Additionally, the Packers have the best win-loss record (.571) and the most victories (804) in NFL history when regular season and postseason games are taken into account.
