The Florida Marlins were an expansion franchise that began play in the 1993 season. The Marlins used to play their home matches at Joe Robbie Field, which they chose to share with the National Football League’s Miami Dolphins (NFL).
The team relocated to Marlins Park in 2012, their first permanent home and the first to be created specifically for baseball. Prior to the 2012 season, the organization changed its name to the Miami Marlins as part of a deal with park landlord Miami-Dade County to use the stadium.
Miami Marlins Mascot
The Miami Marlins’ mascot, Billy the Marlin, is the team’s official mascot. He’s a “natural-born clown and good-natured joker,” standing at 8 feet tall and 250 pounds. He performs his unique act in the midst of the 5th inning at each and every Marlins home match at Marlins Park.
Mr. Huizenga chose his name since a marlin is a sort of billfish, and he desired a name that was unique from the baseball-style titles of other mascots, making it simpler for youngsters to recall.
Billy the Marlin made appearances at U.S. Cellular Field on September 13, 2004, during a home game. The Florida Marlins defeated the Montreal Expos 6-3 in a rescheduled game in Chicago after being evacuated by Hurricane Ivan.
