Bernard Cribbins was a versatile entertainer. He tried his hand at everything from Shakespeare to pantomime, Jackanory to Top of the Pops as an actor, comic, singer, and raconteur.

He provided the voice for the Wombles, Catherine Tate’s lovable grandfather in Doctor Who, and the irritated but kind-hearted station master in the 1970 film The Railway Children.

In 2018, he was over 90 years old and authored an autobiography about his years in the show business.

It was titled Bernard Who? 75 Years Of Doing Absolutely Everything, and its counsel was straightforward.

“Do your best and be thankful for every job.”

Bernard Cribbins was born on December 29, 1928, into a working-class family in Oldham, Lancashire.
