Austin earned a football scholarship to West Virginia University, where he played for the Mountaineers from 2009 to 2012.
As a freshman in 2009, his primary role was converted to wide receiver, but he was still used as a running back on occasion. He had 15 receptions for 151 yards and a touchdown as a rookie, as well as 47 yards on six attempts and a touchdown on a kick return.
