Johnson was raised in Jacksonville, Florida, where he graduated from First Coast High School. He ran for 398 yards and nine touchdowns as a senior, and he completed 215 of 328 throw attempts for 3,710 yards and 47 scores. He was awarded Florida’s “Mr. Football” and the Class 8A Player of the Year.
Despite receiving offers from Clemson and Florida, Johnson chose to play collegiate football at Florida State during the summer before his sophomore year.
The 2020 NFL Draft did not choose Johnson. He participated in The Spring League in 2021 for the Sea Lions, passing for 574 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions over the course of six games.
Johnson was chosen by the New Jersey Generals in the twelfth round of the 2022 USFL Draft. After Luis Perez, he was designated the backup. In the USFL season opener against the Birmingham Stallions, Johnson was frequently employed in different offensive sets and carried for a game-high 98 yards and one touchdown on 12 attempts while also completing 3 of 8 throws for 59 yards. The team ultimately lost 24-28.
