The Dolphins have signed former Miami Hurricane rusher Jalean Philips after selecting him first overall in the 2021 draft.
The signing bonus is $7.5 million, and the total value of the contract is $14 million over four years with an additional year of play.
Phillips, the top-ranked player available in the 2017 NFL Draft, was taken by the Miami Dolphins at No. 18 overall in the first round. A medical retirement from UCLA and a transfer to Miami in 2019 are Phillips’ major concerns.
As a reliable pass rusher, Phillips is exactly what Emmanuel Ogbah’s former team, the Dolphins, lacked last season. Phillips appeared in 10 games and recorded 45 total tackles, 8.0 sacks, and 15.5 tackles for loss. During his lone season with the Hurricanes, Phillips contributed in several ways, including as a pass rusher and with three pass deflections.
With any luck, Phillips will be able to put his injury history behind him and contribute right away as a starting defensive lineman for a squad that is on the upswing.
Phillips joins fellow first-round pick Jaylen Waddle and seventh-round picks Gerrid Doaks and Larnel Coleman as the four players signed from this class.
How Much Does Jaelan Phillips Make?
On average, Jaelan Phillips makes $3,504,551 per year. Phillips’ base salary will be $1,297,191 in 2022, and his cap hit will be $3,185,955.
