A former first-round pick, Igbinoghene has spent the majority of his first two seasons in the NFL on the bench, third stringing behind All-Pros Xavien Howard and Byron Jones.
And now that Jones has been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list after having leg surgery, and is expected to be limited or unavailable by Week 1, Igbinoghene has a second chance to live up to the franchise’s high hopes after selecting him 30th overall in the draft out of Auburn.
Igbinoghene started only three of the 23 games he appeared in throughout his rookie and sophomore seasons, and he only played in 78 defensive snaps last season.
His one appearance in 2021 came in the Dolphins’ loss to the Jaguars in London, which was his third career start. The 139.3 passer rating that Igbinoghene gave up in his coverage area last year was due to the five completions on seven targets for 64 yards and a score.
Igbinoghene, who is in the midst of the third year of a fully guaranteed four-year, $11.25 million contract, is expected to battle Trill Williams for the fourth cornerback job.
Should Jones enter the season with limitations or not be ready by Week 1, as McDaniel has stated he anticipates, then he will get more playing time opposite Howard.
Igbinoghene has a salary of $1.6 million this year and $1.1 million next year, although he is not assured a spot on the team’s 53-man roster.
