Mack Wilson, a new inside linebacker, has joined the New England Patriots. According to several sources, the organization traded outside linebacker Chase Winovich to the Cleveland Browns in order to acquire him.
Both Wilson and Winovich were in a tough spot for their respective teams. Each of them made an impressive professional debut. Both players slowly lost playing time to younger players or veterans. And it became progressively more difficult for them to stand apart. This is why they are looking to switch teams in the hopes of being given more responsibility in their new environment.
The Patriots linebacker unit, in which Wilson will be inserted, is in dire need of fresh blood and reinforcement.
Wilson possesses a variety of traits that are highly prized by the Patriots. His time at Alabama makes him an attractive prospect to Bill Belichick, who is always on the lookout for youngsters with potential. Wilson is a buy-low candidate as well, the type of player who would be better off in New England than in Cleveland.
Is Mack Wilson good?
Where exactly does Wilson’s profile seem off? Of course, he’s considerably shorter than the linebackers the Patriots usually go after. Compared to Dont’a Hightower, who is 6’2 and 240 pounds, Wilson’s stature of 6’1 and 230 pounds seems positively diminutive (6-foot-3, 260 pounds).
It’s worth noting that safety Kyle Dugger and Wilson are very similar in height (6-foot-2, 220 pounds). It remains to be seen if New England adds to its linebacker corps in the coming weeks or is pleased with its current personnel level.
All four of their starting inside linebackers are unsigned free agents: Hightower, Ja’Whaun Bentley, Dont’a Hightower, and Kyle Van Noy.
Wilson, despite not seeing much action in some years, managed to perform admirably in supporting roles.
