On March 22, 1996, Kyle Dugger, a safety for the New England Patriots of the National Football League, was born. He played collegiate football for Lenoir-Rhyne.
Dugger mainly played basketball at Whitewater High School; he didn’t start playing football until his senior year. Lenoir-Rhyne, an NCAA Division II college in North Carolina, Berry College, an NCAA Division III member, and Reinhardt University, an NAIA participant, were three of the institutions that offered Dugger.
Dugger redshirted his rookie year before immediately taking over as the Bears’ main cornerback. He played cornerback while wearing a redshirt during his rookie season, but before his sophomore campaign, he switched to safety due to a meniscus injury.
He recovered three fumbles and had three interceptions during his junior season. Dugger also participated in the 2020 Senior Bowl, where scouts praised his on-field instincts.
Due to his quickness on the field, scouts projected Dugger to play safety, cornerback, or returner in the NFL. In the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots selected Dugger with the 37th overall choice.
He was the first pick in that selection to have experience playing outside of Division I FBS. During the Cowboys’ 29-35 overtime loss in Week 6, Dugger picked off Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott for the first time in his career.
The following week, Dugger picked off Jets quarterback Mike White in the 54-13 victory, giving him his second consecutive game with a pick.
