Davis was supposed to be the Jets’ go-to receiver in his rookie year, but he only played in nine games due to injuries. Corey Davis was signed by the Jets this summer with the expectation that he would take over as New York’s starting wideout in 2021 and beyond.
Although Davis showed hints of being a top-tier receiver in his debut year with the Green and White, he ultimately fell short of his lofty goals.
Davis recorded 34 receptions for 492 yards and four touchdowns despite only appearing in nine games. After missing the final five weeks of the season due to core muscle surgery, he only had a single game in which he surpassed 100 receiving yards.
Is it possible that the Jets wasted $37.5 million over three years on Davis, given that he failed to perform at a No. 1 receiver level?
This week, Sam Monson of PFF ranked the potential free agents signed by the NFL in 2021. While discussing the former, Monson began by bringing up Davis.
As Monson alluded to, Davis had a banner year in his final season with the Titans, accumulating 984 receiving yards on 65 receptions. He struggled with drops and was unable to play for the whole Jets season, often disappearing as Zach Wilson’s favored targets, Elijah Moore and Braxton Berrios, shone at wide receiver.
How many drops did Corey Davis have?
Corey Davis recorded his lowest PFF grade since he was a rookie and the greatest drop rate (15.6%) of his career. Next year, he will have another opportunity, but the Jets need the former first-round choice to step up his performance.
