When the Jets signed former Texans defensive end Jacob Martin to a three-year, $15.5 million contract, they strengthened their pass rush depth.
Martin’s contract, like many of those Joe Douglas, offered this offseason, has a modest cap charge in 2022. According to Connor Hughes of The Athletic, his cap hits in 2022, 2023, and 2024 will be $2.69 million, $6.15 million, and $4.65 million, respectively.
Martin’s base pay follows a similar trajectory, rising from $1.035 million in 2022 to $4.25 million in 2023 and then $3.5 million in 2024.
Additionally, he is entitled to a $3.465 million signing bonus as well as $500,000 in 2022 and $750,000 in 2023 in roster bonuses for the next two seasons. Incentives of $3 million are also available to Martin in 2024.
The only Martin’s wages that are guaranteed are his base salary for 2022 and $1 million for his 2023 wages.
The Jets will save $4 million if they release Martin following the 2022 campaign, but a $3.3 million dead cap charge will be incurred. With just $1.15 million in dead cap, they can save $3.5 million if they fire him after 2023.
