After Marshal Yanda retired from the Ravens after 13 seasons and eight Pro Bowl selections, the right guard position was a major hole to fill.
That starting position was one of the most hotly contested throughout the training camp.
Ultimately, it was Mississippi State’s third-round draft pick, Tyre Phillips who got the nod over D.J. Fluker, despite being a veteran of the league.
The fact that Phillips played so effectively in the season opener against the Browns after suffering an ankle injury earlier in the week is even more impressive.
Phillips is making strides toward being a long-term starter on the offensive line.
Phillips’ accomplishments are even more remarkable because he played left tackle for Mississippi State.
Phillips played in 821 snaps, which was the most on the club, and started all 13 games last year (819 at left tackle and two at left guard).
Pro Football Focus gave him the highest offensive grade of any Mississippi State offensive lineman and the second highest offensive grade of any team in the nation (80.1).
Due to his athleticism, the Ravens decided to move him to guard, where they expect him to continue to improve week after week.
How Much Does Tyre Phillips Make?
Tyre Phillips earns an average of $1,031,823 per year. Phillips’ base salary in 2022 will be $895,000, and his cap hit will be $1,103,073.
