On March 15, 1993, Taylor Heinicke a quarterback with the National Football League’s Washington Commanders was born. He played collegiate football for Old Dominion before joining the Minnesota Vikings as a free agent in 2015.
Heinicke has previously played for the New England Patriots, Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers, and St. Louis BattleHawks of the XFL.
With Washington in 2020, he replaced an injured Alex Smith in a Wild Card playoff game, and after Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered an injury, he started much of the 2021 season.
Heinicke was not drafted in the 2015 NFL Draft, but he signed a free-agent contract with the Minnesota Vikings.
In the competition to back up Teddy Bridgewater, the starting quarterback for the Vikings, he faced off against Shaun Hill and Mike Kafka. As a result of Kafka’s injury and subsequent placement on injured reserve, Heinicke was promoted to the position of backup quarterback.
Heinicke joined the Washington Football Team’s practice squad on December 8, 2020. He was finishing up his engineering degree at Old Dominion when he joined them. On December 19, he was added to their active roster.

At Collins Hill High School in Lawrenceville, Georgia, where he played football for head coach Kevin Reach, Heinicke was named to the all-state team as a junior after leading Collins Hill to a 10-4 record and a trip to the Class AAAAA semifinals.
In 2011, Heinicke accepted an athletic scholarship to attend Old Dominion University (ODU), where he played for the Old Dominion Monarchs football team from 2011 to 2014.
