Michael Thomas Baumann was born on September 10, 1995, in Mahtomedi, Minnesota. His elder brother, Nick, also played baseball and football at Mahtomedi.
Mike Baumann went to Mahtomedi High School in Mahtomedi, Minnesota, where he played baseball and American football. He was drafted in the 34th round of the 2014 MLB draft by the Minnesota Twins, however, he did not sign.
Baumann was drafted in the third round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. Baumann began the 2018 season with the Class A South Atlantic League’s Delmarva Shorebirds.
In May, he was promoted to the Frederick Keys of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League. In 124 innings of work, he went 7–6, with a 2.98 ERA and 142 strikeouts. Baumann was added to the 40-man roster on November 20, 2020.
Baumann made his major league debut with the Orioles on September 7, 2021, against the Kansas City Royals at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
He pitched 3.2 innings in his debut, allowing two hits and one walk. Baumann retired 11 of the 14 hitters he faced, striking out one. He also won his first Major League game.
