Baltimore Orioles pitcher Zacary William Lowther is an American professional baseball player. It wasn’t until 2021 that he made his major league debut.
High school pitcher Lowther attended Ohio’s Cuyahoga Heights High School and was a member of the baseball team.
For two seasons, he was a starter on the varsity football team. Lowther had a 12–2 win-loss record, a 0.71 earned run average (ERA), and 201 strikeouts throughout his three years on the varsity baseball team.
For his college baseball career, he went to Xavier University and played for the Xavier Musketeers. In 2016, his sophomore year, he had the most strikeouts in the Big East Conference with 86.
He was a Cape Cod Baseball League all-star and led the league in strikeouts that summer while playing collegiate summer baseball with the Brewster Whitecaps.
Lowther was selected to the 2017 All-Big East Conference team after recording a Xavier single-season strikeout record of 123.
In the second round of the 2017 MLB draft, the Baltimore Orioles picked Lowther, who was the 74th overall pick. As a result of his great performance on the field, he was drafted in the first round of the MLB draft.
The Orioles paid Lowther $779,500 as part of his contract. After signing with the Aberdeen IronBirds of the Class A-Short Season New York-Penn League, he went 2–2 with a 1.66 ERA in 12 games for the team (11 starts)
