John Alan Means is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles in the United States.
In 2018, he made his Major League Baseball debut, and in 2019, he was named to the All-Star team. On May 5, 2021, Means threw the tenth no-hitter in Orioles history.
On September 24, 2018, the Orioles called up Means to the main leagues. It was announced that Means would be on the team’s Opening Day roster for 2019.
Means was promoted to the Orioles’ starting rotation after three stints in the bullpen with a 1.59 ERA in 523 innings.
On April 9, Means made his major league debut, pitching three innings and conceding one run against the Oakland Athletics.
After two more appearances, Means won his third game of the year and his first as a starter on April 24 against the White Sox, pitching five innings of one-run ball.
When the Red Sox came into the game, he pitched a career-high seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out four.
It was on June 28th, 2019, when Means was named to his first All-Star Game as an All-Star starter as a 26-year-old rookie with a 2.50 ERA.
He started 27 of his 31 games as a starter and went 12–11 with a 3.60 ERA in his first season. He came in second place in the voting for the American League Rookie of the Year.
Means pitched to a 4.53 ERA, 42 strikeouts, and a 2–4 record in 43+23 innings pitched in 10 games pitched, all starts, in the 2020 season, which was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.
