Sulser grew raised in the San Diego mountains near Santa Ysabel, California. However, he went to school in Ramona, California, where his mother was a teacher, for elementary, middle, and high school.
Sulser began playing baseball at the age of four and continued to play Ramona Pony Baseball until he was fourteen. He also participated in a number of local travel teams.
He went to Ramona High School, where he played baseball, was President of the ASB, and acted as a peer mentor. His father was a general building constructor who also coached several of Sulser’s childhood teams.
Beau Sulser, his younger brother, also plays professional baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates following a collegiate career at Dartmouth. Tiffany Sulser, Sulser’s younger sister, is a member of the United States Coast Guard.
