Tyler Anderson, who was born on December 31, 1989, attended Spring Valley High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he played varsity baseball for four years.
Andrew Checketts found Anderson while pitching against a rival high school while working as an assistant coach for the Oregon Ducks baseball team.
Anderson was picked by the Minnesota Twins in the 50th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, but he did not sign. Anderson majored in political science at the University of Oregon and played collegiate baseball for the Ducks.
In 2010, he was chosen to the Pac-10 All-Conference Team with a 2.98 ERA (5th in the Pac-10), and his 105 strikeouts set a new Oregon single-season record and placed sixth in the Pac-10.
Anderson was chosen a Second Team All-American by Louisville Slugger in his junior year, and he was named to the Pac-10 All-Conference Team after posting an 8–3 record and setting two Oregon single-season records.
Pitching 107.2 innings with 114 strikeouts (5th Pac-10) and a 2.17 ERA (4th Pac-10) while keeping opposing batters to a.201 batting average (5th Pac-10). Anderson became the Ducks’ all-time strikeout leader with 285 in three seasons.
