Trevor Bauer Career
Bauer’s stock rose among MLB scouts following his success during the 2011 NCAA season, while Cole was projected to go first overall in the 2011 MLB Draft.
The Pittsburgh Pirates took Cole first overall, as expected, while the Arizona Diamondbacks took Bauer two picks later.
Since 1978, this was the first time two college teammates were chosen first and third overall in the same MLB draft. On July 25, he joined the team and was sent to the California League’s Class A-Advanced Visalia Rawhide.
Before being promoted to the Double-A Mobile BayBears in August, he had only three appearances with Visalia, pitching 14 innings and allowing three runs.
Bauer made his Mobile debut on August 16, striking out eight batters while allowing only five hits over five innings.
Bauer won his first professional baseball game on August 20, tossing five innings in a 13–6 triumph over the Jacksonville Suns for Mobile.
Bauer went 1–1 with a 7.56 ERA in four starts with the BayBears that season, striking out 26 batters in 16+23 innings.
Bauer was the Diamondbacks’ top-rated prospect and MLB’s ninth overall prospect entering the 2012 season.
He was invited to the Diamondbacks’ spring training and pitched in 10 Cactus League innings, going 1–0 with a 3.60 ERA.
Bauer, on the other hand, was unable to unseat Josh Collmenter in Arizona’s starting rotation, and he was demoted to Mobile just before the season began.
Before being promoted to Triple-A Reno Aces on May 17, he made eight more starts for Mobile, going 7–1 with a 1.68 ERA and striking out 60 batters in 48+13 innings.
