Justin Bruihl grew up in Petaluma, California, and graduated from Casa Grande High School. After injuring the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow early in his junior season, he underwent Tommy John surgery.
Bruihl returned to the mound in the second half of his senior year, pitching 17+13 innings with 27 strikeouts and no earned runs.
Bruihl was a member of the Cal Poly Mustangs baseball team while attending California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. As a rookie, he led the team with 25 appearances, a 1–3 record, a 4.88 ERA, and 27 strikeouts in 31+13 innings pitched.
He transferred to Santa Rosa Junior College after the season, where he went 7–0 with a 2.12 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 51 innings pitched. Bruihl announced his decision to transfer to the University of California at the end of his sophomore season.
Bruihl was left off the playoffs roster for the first two rounds but was added for the 2021 National League Championship Series, where he pitched two shutout innings, allowing only one hit and striking out five batters.
