Cleavinger was drafted in the third round of the 2015 MLB draft by the Baltimore Orioles, and he made his professional debut with the Aberdeen IronBirds, where he went 6–1 with a 2.19 ERA in 19 games.
Cleavinger threw for the Delmarva Shorebirds and the Frederick Keys in 2016, finishing 7–3 with a 3.07 ERA in 76+13 innings pitched, a career high.
