Garrett Cleavinger Amateur Career
Lawrence High School in Lawrence, Kansas, is where Cleavinger graduated in 2012.
As a senior, he was selected first-team all-state, first-team all-league, first-team all-area, Player of the Year, and a Perfect Game Central Region All-American.
Cleavinger played college baseball for the Oregon Ducks while attending the University of Oregon. For the Ducks in 2015, he served as the closer.
Cleavinger was 9–0 with a 1.24 ERA and two saves in 37 bullpen appearances (4th in the Pac-12 Conference) as a freshman in 2013, striking out 57 hitters in 43+23 innings (averaging 11.7 strikeouts/9 innings, 4th in the conference).
He set freshman records for appearances and earned run average (ERA) while holding batters to a.137 batting average (the lowest single-season mark by an Oregon pitcher in school history).
Louisville Slugger and the NCBWA both named Cleavinger a freshman All-American (2nd Team).
In 35 relief appearances (leading the conference), he was 3–2 with two saves and a 3.34 ERA, striking out 13.6 batters per nine innings (also leading the conference).
Cleavinger was a member of the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League during the summers of 2013 and 2014.
In 37 bullpen appearances in 2015, he was 6–2 with 9 saves and a 1.58 ERA, leading the conference with 14.9 strikeouts/9 innings and allowing 4.5 hits/9 innings (4th).
Cleavinger was a member of the Ducks along with pitcher Cole Irvin, who would later join the Philadelphia Phillies.
