Ferguson was a West Jefferson High School student in West Jefferson, Ohio. As a senior in 2014, he had Tommy John surgery.
Despite the injury, he was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 38th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft. He chose the Dodgers over his NCAA baseball commitment at West Virginia University by signing with them.
