Heaney was a member of the baseball team at Putnam City High School in Warr Acres, Oklahoma.
He was drafted in the 24th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays, but he declined to sign and instead enrolled at Oklahoma State University, where he played college baseball for the Oklahoma State Cowboys of the Big 12 Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I.
He pitched for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League during the summer of 2011.
In 118+13 innings pitched in 2012, Heaney was 8–2 with a 1.60 earned run average (ERA). With 140 strikeouts, he topped all NCAA pitchers.
In 2012, Heaney was selected Baseball Pitcher of the Year by the Big 12 Conference.
