Austin Scott Barnes is an American Major League Baseball catcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers (MLB). He was a member of the Arizona State Sun Devils throughout his collegiate career.
Barnes was drafted in the eighth round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft by the Florida Marlins. He made his MLB debut with the Dodgers in 2015 and was instrumental in the team’s World Series victory in 2020. Barnes has also played infielder in addition to catching.
Barnes, the oldest of four children born to Dennis and Stephanie Barnes, was born on December 28, 1989, in Riverside, California. Mike Gallego, his maternal uncle, was a Major League Baseball (MLB) player for the Oakland Athletics.
He started playing baseball when he was quite little. Barnes earned the moniker “Hoover” as a shortstop in Little League Baseball due to his ability to catch ground balls.
