Zach was born to Alex McKinstry and Tracy McKinstry on April 29, 1995, in Toledo, Ohio in the United States. He is the second born of his parents.
Zach attended North Side High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana where he played baseball for the school’s baseball team and was ranked as the eighth-best prospect in the state of Indiana.
After high school, he enrolled at the University of Michigan where he continued to play college baseball for the Central Michigan University Chippewas. He played for the Waterloo Bucks of the Northwoods League and the Orleans Firebirds of the Cape Cod League after his college career.
Zach was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 33rd round of the 2016 MLB draft. He agreed to play for the team and signed with them in July that year.
He began his professional career by playing in four games for the Arizona League Dodgers. In August 2020 he was to the major leagues but he could not make his debut so he was called up again to the major leagues in September that year and he made his MLB debut when the Dodgers played against the San Diego Padres.
