He was born to Jerry and Phyllis Thompson on March 13, 1995, in Cullman, Alabama in the United States of America. Thompson had his high school education and amateur career in his birth town at Cullman High School. He was named Alabama’s Gatorade Player of the Year during his junior year and senior in high school.
When he completed high school, no team drafted him so he continued his education by attending Auburn University where he played college baseball for the Auburn Tigers of the University. After college, the Chicago Cubs selected him in the third round of the 2017 MLB draft.
He agreed to play for the Cubs and signed with them for a $511,900 signing bonus. He then kicked off his professional career by playing in the minor league for the Eugene Emeralds that season. He spent the 2018 baseball season with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Whiles with the Pelicans, he was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week twice.
