Thompson was born March 13, 1995, to parents Jerry Thompson and Phyllis Thompson. He grew up in Cullman Alabama where he attended high school. He played high school baseball for Cullman High School. After high school, he gained admission into Auburn University where he played college baseball for the Auburn Tigers of the University. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs during the 2017 MLB draft.
He signed with the Cubs after which he received an amount of $511,900 as a signing bonus. He began his professional career by playing for the Eugene Emeralds of the minor league for the 2017 season. He spent the 2018 baseball season with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
