Willson Eduardo Contreras, simply referred to as Willson Contreras is a professional baseball player from Venezuela who plays the position of a catcher for the Chicago Cubs baseball team of the Major League Baseball(MLB). Willson owns the number 40 jersey in the team.
He was born May 13, 1992, to William and Olga Contreras in Puerto Cabello in Venezuela. When he was 16 years old, he enrolled at a baseball academy owned by the Chicago Cubs baseball team that was situated in Venezuela.
In 2009, the Chicago Cubs signed him to their team as an international free agent. He was then made to begin his professional career by playing with the Dominican Summer League Cubs of the minor league baseball that season.
During the 2013 minor league season, Willson played with the Kane County Cougars and he spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons with the Daytona Cubs and the Tennessee Smokies. The Cubs named him their Minor League Player of the Year in 2015 after which he was added to their 40-man roster.
In June 2016, Willson was promoted to the major leagues for the first time and in April the following year, he made it to the Cubs’ opening day roster as a starting catcher when they played against the St. Louis Cardinals.
