Willson Eduardo Contreras (born May 13, 1992) is a Venezuelan professional baseball catcher for Major League Baseball’s Chicago Cubs.
He debuted in Major League Baseball in 2016, and he was a member of the 2016 World Series champions. In both 2018 and 2019, Contreras was selected as a starter for the MLB All-Star Games.
Contreras signed as an international free agent with the Chicago Cubs in 2009. That same year, he made his professional debut with the Dominican Summer League Cubs. At the age of 17, he batted.205 in 29 games.
At the age of 18, he batted.313 in 17 games for them in 2010. He was a member of the Boise Hawks in 2011 and 2012. Contreras played for the Kane County Cougars in 2013, the Daytona Cubs in 2014, and the Tennessee Smokies in 2015.
After hitting.333/.413/.478 with eight home runs in 2015, he was voted the Cubs Minor League Player of the Year.
He played catcher, first base, second base, third base, left field, and right field during his minor league career. After the season, the Cubs added him to their 40-man roster.
On June 17, 2016, he was promoted to the Cubs major league squad as a catcher.
After two pick-off attempts by the pitcher to first base, he blasted a two-run home run on the first pitch of his first major-league at-bat on June 19, becoming the 30th player in the current MLB era to do so.
In his fifth game, he started at first base, and in his eighth game, he started in left field, establishing himself as a versatile field player. Contreras had 80 hits in 295 at-bats during the regular season, with 12 home runs, 35 RBIs, and a.275 batting average.
