The Chicago Cubs picked Hoerner with the 24th overall pick in the 2018 MLB draft, and he signed a two-year, $2.72 million contract with the team.

With the Arizona League Cubs, he made his professional debut in June, was demoted to the Eugene Emeralds, then was promoted to the South Bend Cubs in mid-June.

The strained ligament in his left elbow landed him on the disabled list on July 18 and he was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the regular season.

With six stolen bases and two home runs in 14 games between the three teams before his injury, he had a batting average of .327.

His next stop was the Arizona Fall League, where he was allocated to the Mesa Solar Sox after the season ended.

Hoerner opened the new year with a trip to Tennessee. After being hit in the left wrist on April 27, he was placed on the injured list and didn’t play again until early July.

He slashed .284/.344/.399 with three home runs, 22 RBIs, and eight stolen bases in seventy games with the Smokies.

He became the first member of his draft class to reach the main leagues when Chicago picked his contract and promoted him to the big leagues on September 9th, 2019.

His major league debut came against the San Diego Padres that evening. In his first at-bat, Hoerner singled against Cal Quantrill and went 3-for-5 with four RBIs.

Hoerner had a .282 batting average with three home runs and 17 RBIs in 20 games with the Cubs.
