Rivas was born on the side of Interstate 805 and lived in Tijuana before transferring to Chula Vista, California, in fourth grade.
Rivas graduated from La Jolla Country Day School in La Jolla, California in 2015. He attended the University of Arizona and played collegiate baseball there.
As a sophomore in 2017, he appeared in 58 games and batted.371 with seven home runs, 64 RBIs, and 54 runs. That summer, he was a member of the Yarmouth–Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod Baseball League.
Rivas participated in 56 games as a junior in 2018, hitting.347 with seven home runs and 52 RBIs. Following the season’s end, he was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the fourth round of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft.
The Cubs picked Rivas’ contract and promoted him to the major leagues on August 28, 2021. [16] He was cutting at the time of his promotion.
Over 58 games with Iowa, he hit 284/.405/.411 with four home runs, 32 RBIs, and 13 doubles. The next day, he made his MLB debut at first base against the Chicago White Sox at Wrigley Field, earning two singles in three at-bats as the Cubs lost 13-1.
He hit his first MLB home run on September 14 against Kyle Gibson of the Philadelphia Phillies.
