Ian was born to Keith Happ and Mary Beth Happ. He grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the United States of America and had his high school amateur career in his birth town. He was at the Mt. Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
When he completed high school, he played college baseball for the Cincinnati Bearcats at the University of Cincinnati. He also played collegiate summer baseball for the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League whiles still at the University.
During the 2015 MLB draft, the Chicago Cubs selected him in the first round the draft. He signed with the Cubs and began his professional career starting with the Eugene Emeralds of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League.
The Cubs later promoted him to the South Bend Cubs of the Class A Midwest League that same season. During the 2016 minor league season, he played for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League. MLB.com ranked him as the third-best prospect in Chicago’s farm system that year.
Ian was promoted to the major leagues for the first time on May 13 2017 by the Cubs. He made his MLB debut that same day.
