Matthew Robert Boyd was born on February 2, 1991. He is a 31-year-old Major League Baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the San Francisco Giants (MLB).
Boyd was optioned to the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens on March 30, 2016. On April 24, Boyd was called up from Toledo and made one bullpen appearance against the Cleveland Indians before being sent down to Triple-A.
Boyd was summoned to the Tigers again on May 27 after it was announced that Jordan Zimmermann would miss a start. When Anbal Sánchez was relegated to the Tiger bullpen on May 31, he was promoted to the starting rotation. Boyd was optioned to Triple-A Toledo for the third time this season after an unproductive start on June 18.
After both Jordan Zimmermann and Daniel Norris were placed on the injured list within 24 hours of each other, Boyd was back with the Tigers by July 9. On July 18, he had the greatest start of his short career, allowing no runs and only three hits in six innings against the Minnesota Twins, winning 1–0.
Boyd had a career-high 31 starts and 170+13 innings thrown in 2018, going 9–13 with a 4.39 ERA and 159 strikeouts. During the season, he only allowed 146 hits and was 10th among qualifying American League starts with 7.714 hits per nine innings.
