A fourth-round pick by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2006 Major League Baseball draft, Cobb signed with the Rays. From 2006 to 2010, he was a member of their farm team.
For the whole 2010 season, he pitched for Double-A Montgomery. He had a 7–5 record with a 2.71 ERA in 22 games (22 starts), 128 strikeouts in 119.2 innings (third in the Southern League and tied for fourth in the Rays’ system), and a 9.51 strikeouts/9 inning ratio as a starter (leading the league).
On May 1, 2011, Cobb was promoted to the major leagues for the first time and made his major league debut.
After the game, he was sent back to the minors. Cobb was called up to the majors again on May 31. On June 7, he became the first Rays pitcher to win a major league game as a starter. The Rays beat the Angels 4–1 after Cobb threw 613 innings.
His right arm began to swell and lose feeling in late July. It turned out that after his August 5 start, he needed surgery to remove an embolism from his first right rib and to amputate part of another rib.
He was forced to retire after undergoing two surgeries in 2011. While in Tampa Bay he was 3–2 across nine starts, with an earned run average (ERA) of 3.42 (52.22 innings), in 2011.
