Sean Anthony Hjelle (born May 7, 1997) is a Major League Baseball pitcher who currently plays for the San Francisco Giants. At the University of Kentucky, he was a baseball player. In the 2018 Major League Baseball draft, the Giants picked Hjelle in the second round. He stands 6’11” (2.11 m) tall. Hjelle and Jon Rauch, a former pitcher, are the two tallest players in big league history.
Hjelle was taken in the second round of the 2018 MLB draft by the San Francisco Giants, with the 45th overall pick.
He made his professional debut with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes after signing a $1.5 million signing bonus. Hjelle pitched for Salem-Keizer for the whole season, posting a 5.06 ERA in 12 appearances.
Hjelle began the 2019 season with the Class A South Atlantic League’s Augusta GreenJackets, where he started on Opening Day. In May, he was promoted to the San Jose Giants’ Class A Advanced club. The Giants advanced Hjelle to the Class AA Eastern League’s Richmond Flying Squirrels in August, where he ended the year. Hjelle was 7–9 with a 3.32 ERA across 28 starts for the three teams.
Hjelle pitched in the Class AAA Pacific Coast League for the Sacramento River Cats in 2021. Hjelle was added to the Giants’ 40-man roster following the season. On May 6, 2022, he made his MLB debut with Sacramento.
