Wood was born in the North Carolina city of Charlotte. He went to Ardrey Kell High School, where he was on the baseball team. In 2009, he was awarded North Carolina Class 4A Player of the Year.
He enrolled in the University of Georgia and was a member of the Georgia Bulldogs’ baseball team. Wood redshirted his rookie year at Georgia because he needed Tommy John’s surgery after graduating from high school.
In 32 games at Georgia, Wood had a 13–10 record with a 3.57 ERA. He struck out 180 batters and walked 47 in 204+13 innings.
He formerly played for the Atlanta Braves, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Cincinnati Reds.
Wood throws with a jerky three-quarters delivery. Based on his recent performance, Wood began throwing from the stretch position on a regular basis in 2018.
He throws a four-seam fastball at 91–95 mph (146–153 km/h), a two-seam sinker at 91–95 mph (146–153 km/h), a changeup at 84–85 mph (135–137 km/h), and a knuckle-curve at 79–81 mph (127–130 km/h).

Wood was 10–4 with a 3.83 ERA in the 2021 regular season. He struck out 152 hitters in 138.2 innings thrown in 26 starts, averaging 9.9 strikeouts per 9 innings, and was fourth in the National League in hit batters (16).
Wood re-signed with the Giants on a two-year, $25 million contract on December 1, 2021.
