Thairo Jose Estrada Villegas is a Venezuelan Major League Baseball infielder for the San Francisco Giants (MLB). Estrada signed as an international free agent with the New York Yankees in 2012.
He was a New York-Pennsylvania League Mid-Season All-Star in 2015 and an Eastern League Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star in 2017.
He was wounded by thieves in early 2018, and his rehabilitation delayed the start of his season when he played with a bullet still lodged in his hip.
He formerly played in Major League Baseball with the Yankees, with whom he made his MLB debut in 2019.
Estrada was shot in the right hip/thigh by a couple of youths during a robbery attempt in his hometown of Bejuma, Venezuela, in January 2018, when he and his wife were in a café, and he was at the counter.
The bullet was removed six months later, in July 2018, at a Tampa, Florida hospital. “The situation [in Venezuela] is not very nice, not very safe… it makes you think about not even coming back,” he stated.
Thairo and his wife have a son.
