Thomas Frank La Stella was born on January 31, 1989, in Westwood, New Jersey, to Jane and Phil La Stella. He was raised in nearby Closter, New Jersey, with his two brothers.
He is of Italian ancestry. In Montvale, New Jersey, La Stella attended Saint Joseph Regional High School. He was a member of the St. John’s Red Storm and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in collegiate baseball.
La Stella batted.388 with 28 home runs and 136 RBI in 125 games (all starts) for the Chanticleers in 2010/2011. He made only 12 mistakes in 509 chances for Coastal Carolina, giving him a fielding percentage of.976. In 2010, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Bourne Braves in the Cape Cod Baseball League.

On August 31, his 21st pinch-hit of the season, a single in the seventh inning of a game against the Philadelphia Phillies, set the Cub mark for pinch hits in a season, which Thad Bosley and Dave Clark had previously shared.
