On a baseball scholarship, he has committed to attend Vanderbilt University. Yastrzemski, who is expected to be drafted in the first round of the 2009 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft, has stated that unless he is selected in the first round, he will attend college.
In the 36th round (1,098th overall) of the draft, the Boston Red Sox picked him. Rather than signing with the Red Sox, Yastrzemski enrolled at Vanderbilt University to play baseball for the Commodores.
In the midst of his freshman year, Yastrzemski became a starter for the Commodores. He played collegiate summer baseball with the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Cotuit Kettleers in 2010 and 2011.
