Darren was born in October 1982 to parents Ralph O’Day and Michal O’Day in Jacksonville, Florida in the United States of America. Darren began his non-professional baseball career in high school where he played for the Bishop Kenny Crusaders at Bishop Kenny High School. He was given an athletic scholarship from the University of Florida after high school to play college baseball for their baseball team.
He played for the Florida Gators baseball team throughout his time in college. Within that period, he earned the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Academic Honor Roll recognition and was also named the Academic All-American. In 2006, he signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as a free agent.
The Angels promoted him to the majors in 2008 and he made his MLB debut that year with the Angels. He was claimed off waivers by the Texas Rangers in April 2009 and in November 2011, he was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles. Three years after being with the Orioles, he resigned from a four-year contract worth $31 million with them.
Darren signed with the New York Yankees in February 2021 and in November that same year, the Braves signed him on a minor league contract.
